2009 Recap: What will 2010 bring us?

Perhaps this is a bit premature, but personally, I think this blog is perfect timing.  As most of us scramble to get our PO's cut and use up the last of our 2009 budget we don't reflect back on what this year brought us.

2009 was a heck of a year.  We've ushered in a new era of computing this year.  Microsoft introduced the world to Windows 7, which is a home run compared to vista, and Apple fell from grace with Snow Leopard.  I think RIM has released about 400 different Blackberries, each different than the last.  Intel released i7 core, and Dell made a cell phone.  Apple released yet another version of the iPhone, Microsoft brought Windows Mobile 6.5 to market, and Google even introduced their phone, Droid.

Somehow in 2009 it became the cool thing to turn everything into a cloud.  Didn't matter if it made good business sense, everybody was building clouds so you should too.  2009 brought us Microsoft Exchange 2010 (I'm not sure this was a good thing though) and IBM came to the market a day late n' dollar short with IBM Notes Online.  Telco companies finally provided a viable solution to compete with cable, and have the technology to pipe fiber to your house!

2009 also marked the end of some truly monumental things.  Yahoo gave up trying to beat Google in search and outsourced their searches to Microsoft.  Yahoo also dissolved GeoCities ushering the end of what was left of the .COM era -- they also proved no matter how good an idea is, you might never make it profitable.  SCO met their match in 2009 finally sticking a fork in themselves.  Nortel and their massive debts succumbed to the pressure of the economy, and as of Thursday the house that Welch built will come crumbling down with the sale of NBC to Comcast by GE.

2009 has been a turbulent and difficult year for everyone, but as we embark on 2010 it will be interesting to see what is in store for us.  What will be the next new big thing?  The next triumph or downfall...? Personally I think 2010 will usher in a level of mobile computing that we could only dream of.  I think security will become more transparent and we will continue to automate even more things in business.

No matter what happens in 2010 though, one thing is for sure -- no matter what nobody will forget 2009
