Deduplication is the process of eliminating duplicate or redundant block level data on a storage device. Depending on the type of files stores you get different levels of performance.

When we were initially setting up our Netapp filer, the good folks at NetApp said your dedupe millage will vary depending on the type of files you have stored. You get more dedupe savings from uncompressed files such as .doc, .txt. etc.

In our case, we are storing hundreds of thousands of image files in TIFF format which has compression.
